"RIDDICK" from Universal opens Fri., Sept. 6, 2013.
STARRING Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Jordi Malla, Karl Urban.
DIRECTOR: David Twohy ("Pitch Black", " Chronicles of Riddick")
Betrayed and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators, becoming stronger than ever. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge.
"Pitch Black" was released in 2000. It was one of the better creature features and helped establish Vin Diesel as a valid larger-than-life action figure. Then came "Chronicles of Riddick" in 2004 and it nearly bored all action film fans to tears. It wasn't horrible just really boring.
Now, nearly nine years later, Twohy wrote and directed the second sequel with a lot of help from Diesel. Mostly, it's worth the wait although there are flaws. The biggest flaw is that it's just too reminiscent of "Alien Resurrection" with a hint of "Alien vs. Predator" thrown in. It's just too familiar and the creatures seem to be less unique than they did in "Pitch Black".
"Pitch Black" gave a very unique perspective to the hostile alien dynamic. Inventive creatures who live in the dark and are quite intelligent. The filming was equally inventive, using filters and hidden lights to evoke a sensation of living in darkness. A great touch for sure. That seems to be missing here although the possibility exists that one might have seen too many creature features. Who knows?
This film is loaded with action and miserable characters who deserve what they get. Diesel is good at what he does and he is faithful to his character from both previous films but revenge is revenge and there's not much unique in this presentation. Still, it's nice to see Diesel in anything not titled 'fast' or 'furious' for an extremely welcome change. This is a solid popcorn movie well worth the bucks.
