Coming to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in Palo Alto, is an exhibition of works from French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). This exhibition is expect to serve as a demonstration of the influence this artist had on the Western world.
Rodin and America: Influence and Adaptation 1876-1936 will feature 107 sculptures, drawings, paintings, and photographs created by 42 artists, and hailing from 44 American museums, foundations, and private collections. The exhibiton explores the impact Rodin has left on American artists throughout the 20thcentury. These artists include Georgia O’ Keeffe and John Storrs. Among the works featured is a sculpture titled Torso of Elevation, which is perhaps inspired by two of the artist famous sculptures, The Age of Bronze and the Thinker. In addition to works by artists influenced by Rodin, this exhibition will also include 25 of the artist’s own works in various mediums including watercolor and bronze.
Finally, Rodin and America will offer visitors a sense of rediscovery of what the artist has impacted on the art world. It will perhaps be the same kind of rediscovery that is seen all around, especially in many of the replicas of his works (one case in point is a copy of the Thinker, located at the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco).
