Inflammation being touted as the real culprit in heart disease

For three decades, doctors have been telling the American populace that their cholesterol must be controlled in order to reduce the risk of heart disease. But there is new thinking in the medical community, particularly among doctors who have seen a rise in heart disease during that same 30 year period, that this absolutist approach may be flawed.
According to Dr. Dwight Lundell, a renowned heart surgeon for over 25 years, the culprit they should have been warning us about is not cholesterol, but rather, inflammation.
Inflammation is defined as 'a reaction of the body's tissues to injurious agents.' Scientists are discovering that this condition can cause problems not only with the cardiovascular system, but also contribute to diseases of the digestive and musculoskeletal systems.
So you may be asking 'Now what do we do?' More and more physicians are approaching this issue from a holistic viewpoint. Diet is certainly a lynchpin in this new emphasis on fighting inflammation by increasing the amount and types of fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking pastas al dente, focusing on beans and sweet potatoes and whole grains, as well as omega-3-rich fish and eggs. Also included in this focus is lean meats, poultry products and increased fiber. The emphasis continues on a reduction in processed, high-ingredient products, excessive sugar intake, and too much alcohol.
And not a few physicians are recommending multi-vitamins and other supplements to fight the ravaging effects of the body's reaction to near-toxic foods resulting in inflammation of all systems.
It is not a bad thing to question your cardiologist when he or she recommends a medication to reduce cholesterol when developing treatment modalities for heart disease prevention.
Now you are armed with some facts about inflammation.
