Infidelity experts - consider the source

As a private investigator and the author of The More You Know – Getting the evidence and support you need to investigate a troubled relationship, featured on Dr. Phil, who has successfully investigated infidelity over four decades, it’s time to set the record straight about private investigators.

Infidelity has been investigated now for centuries. Private investigators often work at the direction of lawyers hired to prove grounds for divorce. For some, it’s just a matter of “need to know” and private investigators offer that unique service.

Fortunately, the business of private investigations requires regulating, unlike the business of infidelity experts. Licensing in most states, especially the larger ones, requires educational accomplishments, verifiable professional experience and clean backgrounds. Our business continues to evolve as does the technology and techniques we employ.

Private investigators must possess skill, knowledge and desire to assess, discover and garner facts if they wish to succeed. Evidence collected often amounts to video footage, photographs, statements, observations, records, documents and background checks - the stuff demands a verdict. (And that evidence must stand legal scrutiny.) This is a challenging and rewarding pursuit for those suited to take it on.

So let's turn the focus on the business of "infidelity experts" for  just a moment. What makes one an expert? Are legitimate credentials necessary to confirm their expert status? Can they be self-imposed? Are there any standards applied before one earns that title? What are the litmus tests? What is their purpose?

Rarely, if ever, is an infidelity expert called upon to discuss signs of infidelity. Warning signs are never a topic for cross examination never.” The demand for their expert testimony is non-existent.

Thousands of our clients never needed a book on warning signs to know they were in trouble, now or 50 years ago. However, they sought answers that solved their crisis. In fact, I addressed the topic of warning signs on Dr. Phil not long ago, which is merely the initial phase of any investigation.

Identifying the "warning signs of infidelity" is elementary and merely the start of the resolution process. To claim otherwise appears short-sighted.The topic of warning signs of a cheating spouse merely confirms suspicion and that's it. An injury that will not heal requires a doctor's care, not an expose' on them. Patients seek practitioners who heal instead. Maybe "holistic infidelity experts" are what we need, those who follow this crisis from beginning to end.

So, how does an “infidelity expert” help win your divorce or custody battle? If their advice proves grounds for divorce, convinces a court who is the "better" parent for primary custody or leverages evidence, then their service might be beneficial.

And "expert" advice is not self-serving.

Let's turn the discussion back to Private investigators who, like any other entrepreneurs, must “sink or swim”. Otherwise, they disappear - it’s that simple.

Reputation is a big factor in service industries and no less true with investigators.

In fact, I devoted an entire chapter to selecting the best one in your locale, especially since I have a unique insight into how this industry works. In my book, The More You Know – Getting the evidence and support you need to investigate a troubled relationship, I exhaustively cover this topic.

As private investigators, we have to be sensitive to the myriad of feelings associated with domestic cases. The injury caused by infidelity will destroy one's outlook unless they are encouraged to take steps not to fall prey to it's harmful effects. I've dedicated my last chapter to this issue because I care about my clients.

Every day, around the world, private investigators come to the aid of those in trouble – not merely in divorce matters or merely to make money. Some of us are driven to find answers, uncover leads and make recommendations to better our clients or their lives. It's not unusual for us to have terrible sleeping habits, working un-godly hours to be at the right place and right time. We long for the "money shot" as we refer to it in our trade, where significant proof is obtained.

Many private investigators backgrounds include federal, state and local law enforcement agency experience whose service to society should be admired not tarnished by the uniformed. They earned the right to hang a shingle on their office wall.

The next time you require “expert” advise on any matter; infidelity, private investigators, engineering, law, medicine or science, be sure to “check the label” before heeding it. Wayward counsel might seriously harm you and your future. You might just miss the opportunity to prove how you were wronged or better yet, find closure.

When it comes to "experts", a second opinion is definitely warranted. I’ve always been taught “consider the source.”
