UPDATE: Carmen is safe. She has been rescued by the Heigl Foundation. Many thanks to everyone who has shared Carmen's story and helped bring awareness to the plight of so many homeless dogs and cats in this world. Sharing saves lives.
Carmen is a one-year-old pit bull mix at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter whose cries can be heard from far away. At this time, the brindle and white pooch is being housed in Isolation Kennel 10. A volunteer who visited with the terrified young dog on Saturday states:
"I came closer and started talking to her, and she cried more and louder. When I was doing the video, I saw she has many ticks. Unfortunately what my eyes saw, you can't see through the video. It is dark in the isolation kennel; plus the ticks are under her belly. Then I saw more ticks on her right ear. Lots of ticks! I did a search online and tried to attached to the collage something similar with what I saw today. What I saw is worse. These nasty ticks are eating her alive."
Carmen's pleas for help are utterly heartbreaking. Please watch her video.
The shelter stated that Carmen has been sprayed for the ticks, but that task is usually one done by picking them off one by one. Unfortunately, rules and regulations preclude almost every volunteer from even touching the dogs.
