A series of infant deaths after receiving the pentavalent vaccine has prompted doctors and academicians in Mumbai, India to write against its mass use. The pentavalent vaccine is supposed to provide protection against five diseases - Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b).
The DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) and Hepatitis B vaccine are already part of the national routine vaccination program. The supposed protection against Hib has been just been added by the union government. The combination of these vaccines together is called pentavalent.
The pentavalent vaccine was recently introduced in Haryana, Goa, and Pondicherry after Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Kerala, three infants have reportedly died in the past month after receiving the vaccine. One death was also reported from Haryana this month.
