While lightning-infused Cole McGrath served as series protagonist for the first two inFamous titles, inFamous: Second Son introduces the brand-new main character of Delsin Rowe as the new helm of the series. Speaking to Eurogamer on March 19, Sucker Punch Game Director Nate Fox revealed the internal process that the developer dealt with after deciding to bring in a new playable lead.
Fox admitted that it was difficult to move past the idea of abandoning McGrath, which Sucker Punch spent both previous entries creating. He even revealed that the third installment of the inFamous series was originally going to take place with an evil Cole as they first intended to follow the evil ending of Infamous 2.
I wrote the evil ending of the game to be the continuation. We worked on him for so long, and the world was in a good spot so that's what I was hoping it would be. I was definitely grumpy. But! I'm happy now that it ended up the way it did. With a new hero, new powers and a new story it's a lot easier for people who've never played inFamous to get into the series.
Ultimately, the developer moved away from evil Cole after discovering that the vast majority of players chose the “good ending” of inFamous 2 when trophy data was compiled. The overwhelming response that fans wanted to keep McGrath good led to creation of Delsin. As a new character, players will be able to decide if they want Rowe to be heroic or become the villain himself.
inFamous: Second Son launches as a Playstation 4 exclusive this Friday.
