The best costumes are always homemade. Let your toddler join in the fun by helping you make the costume. Some of the favorite characters to choose from are easy to make. Dora and Diego are all about the clothes. Characters from Ni Hao Kai-lan can be duplicated with fun masks. With a little creativity your toddler’s costume can be free.
If your toddler wants to be Dora, use the clothes they already have. Orange shorts and a pink shirt can pass for Dora. To make the costume complete make a purple backpack. Take purple material and cut an eight inches by five inches rectangle and a 12 inches by five inches rectangle. You will cut one end of the twelve inch rectangle into a point and that will be the flap on the backpack. Take material glue and glue the rectangles together. Use the purple fabric to make two shoulder straps for the backpack and you are done. If you are really creative you can make a map for the backpack as well. It will attach to the side of the backpack.
Blue pants, light blue shirt and a tan vest could make any toddler look like Diego. To complete the costume Diego has a tan satchel, a backpack but with one strap, that looks like a dark orange color. The satchel could be a leather color. If you have an old shoulder bag it could work for your toddler’s Diego satchel. If you need to make one, follow the directions for Dora’s backpack except use one strap to go from the backpack across the front of your toddler’s chest diagonally and wrap around to the satchel and connect to the backside of it.
Animal characters are toddler’s favorites to make. They make their own mask, making the costume special to them. Tolee is a koala and Rintoo is a tiger. You can easily make masks out of paper plates. For Rintoo let your toddler color the plate yellow. Cut out two eye slots so your toddler can see. Add three black stripes to the top of the plate and three on each side of the plate. If you want to cut a mouth or a nose hole, add one after your child finishes coloring. Color Rintoo’s nose red. With yellow clothing your child can become the perfect tiger. Do not forget to add black stripes to the clothes.
If you are going to make a koala you will want to color the plate gray. Add eye holes and cut a nose or mouth hole for your toddler. The nose for the koala should be black. Add two ears to the top of the koala mask by cutting circles out of another paper plate and color them gray. Tape them to the face mask and you now have a koala mask. Let your toddler wear gray clothes for the perfect costume.
