Mange is a parasitic condition that affects many dogs. Treatment options can be quite costly, messy and sometimes not very effective. Your dog can be in extreme discomfort. In order to help your dog with a mange problem, it is important to identify the type of mange and its severity. Contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home if you suspect your dog has mange or any other parasitic condition.
There are two types of mange; Sarcoptic and Demodex. The Sarcoptic mange is also known as scabies and is highly contagious. The mange is caused by a microscopic mite that invades the skin and affects both animals and humans. The Demodectic mange, known as red mange, is also due to a microscopic mite but is not as invasive and serious as the Sarcoptic mange. Each type of mange requires different treatment options. There are some inexpensive solutions that you can choose to help your dog with a mange problem.
Natural home remedies are not only an inexpensive remedy for mange but also a chemical-free solution. Some home remedies may include a dietary plan consisting of vegetables such as broccoli and watercress. Include supplements such as Vitamin C, E, fish oil and other Omega-3 fatty acids such as pumpkin seed and flaxseed oil.
A solution that is made with two tablespoons of borax and two cups of one per cent hydrogen peroxide can be directly applied to affected areas on the dog’s skin. You can also try washing your dog with this solution about once a week and let air dry until the condition clears.
Other home remedies may include brushing the dog daily to remove dead skin, fur and mites. Use plain yogurt on the inside of the ears to clear the mange. Add one tablespoon of cider vinegar to the dog’s food. Boil sliced lemon in water and let sit overnight, and then apply to affected areas. Apply local fresh honey to affected areas to soothe and reduce redness.
The use of homeopathic products such as silicea, sulphur and psorinum help in the treatment of affected and infected skin. A definitive diagnosis to the type of mange your dog has needs to be determined by your veterinarian before treating with any homeopathic remedies.
There is also an insecticide called Prolate/Lintox-HD which can be purchased inexpensively for the treatment of mange and other parasites. Mix one ounce of the Prolate in a gallon of water. The solution can be used to dip your dog and let air dry two to three times a week for two weeks, being careful to protect the pet’s eyes. The solution can also be used in a spray bottle to spray on the dog along with the dog kennel and other belongings. Multiple treatments of dipping the dog and intervals of spraying the dog work best to get all the mites that are causing the mange.
You can speak with your veterinarian regarding the various inexpensive options for treating a mange condition in your dog. Never allow the condition to go untreated as a minor problem can become so severe, it is difficult to treat completely. There are always options to get your dog the care it needs.
