Lost in all the headlines from Houston is one simple fact: Team Penske is on the verge of another championship collapse. This year’s victim appears to be Helio Castroneves. After controlling the championship for much of the year, the Brazilian requires a sub-par performance from new points leader Scott Dixon in tonight’s finale to even have a chance.
Fortunately, qualifying does provide some hope. Clearly, Chevrolet has more raw speed than Honda, but that was true at Pocono. Ganassi swept the podium in Long Pond.
Still, with a clear speed edge, anything’s possible over 500 miles. Perhaps tonight will bring redemption for the Penske team after all.
The MAVTV 500 airs at 8:00 EDT, though the green flag might not fall until sometime after 9:00.
