Indy pet lovers: IVEC pet carnival and free microchipping

The weather is still hot but hopefully you can get out and enjoy some pet events this weekend. Saturday is the 14th annual IVEC Pet Carnival. It's free to attend but donations will be accepted to help local shelters. Leashed or crated pets are welcome to attend and it's a very family friendly event. Scooby Do will be there as well as vendors, games, food and adoptable pets.

Ameriana Bank is hosting another free microchip event on Saturday, July 14. It will be held at their Carmel location on West 106th Street and will benefit the Humane Society for Hamilton County. The first 50 pets will be chipped for free-limit one per household. If you need to get another pet chipped, it will be $5 for the second one and $30 for the third and beyond.

Many local rescues and shelters will be holding adoption events. You can find out more by checking their websites for time and location. Wags Strays, a small no kill rescue, will have adoptable dogs at the Petco in Fisher on 96th Street from 10 AM-2 PM on Saturday. All their dogs are up to date on vaccines, dewormed, microchipped and altered. Most are also housebroken and/or crate trained.

The Humane Society of Indianapolis is holding an Intro to Healing Touch for Pets also on Saturday. It will be from 9:30-10:30 AM at the shelter. Cost is $20 and you can sign up here.

A great way to wind down the weekend is having dinner on the patio at the Milano Inn with your pet. This Sunday, a portion of their sales will go to help Westie Rescue of Indiana. Talk about a win/win situation! You get to eat yummy Italian food while hanging out with your pet and helping other pets in need.

If you are taking your pet out and about this weekend, please be mindful of the heat and NEVER leave them in a car even with the air conditioner running. Also hot pavement can blister their feet so if it's too hot for you to walk on, it's too hot for them. Take plenty of water with you and keep them cool.

As always, thanks for opting to adopt. To stay up to date on local rescue info, subscribe above. If you would like to see your rescue group, shelter, event or adoptable animals featured here, send an email to
