With frigid temperatures surrounding the St. Louis area today and schools being closed winter is starting to wear out its welcome and everyone is dreaming of warmer weather. But with no warm up in sight it’s a good time to have an indoor summer party for the kids. One of their favorite past time activities is playing dress-up and pretend play so pretend it’s summer and throw a summer party for them in the middle of winter.
Pretend your going on a summer vacation to a place that is always warm such as Florida or Hawaii. You can pretend you’re on the beach or have a luau.
Decorate the room with anything that reminds you of summer such as photos of a beach with an ocean, flowers or seashells, anything that will give the room a summer or beach look. You will have to have a sun of some kind. Make one by drawing one out on a poster board and painting it or make a sun craft decoration. Hang it up so the kids can get the real feel of summertime on a beach.
Now you will want to get the smell of the beach in the room by spraying a tropical scented room freshener, light a scented candle or coconut incense.
Grab some beach towels and lay them out on the floor. Get some scented lotion such as coconut that reminds you of summer. The kids can put some on their hands and arms to get the aroma of summer. Get some of those cheap plastic sunglasses and some Hawaiian leis for all the kids to wear. Put on some beach music or a CD with sounds of a water fall or birds.
Now for activities you can hula dance to some Hawaiian music. If you have any moon sand have them build a sandcastle. If you have a large enough room play limbo. You could also do a beach themed scavenger hunt. They could also pretend they are surfing the waves.
For food what better way to get into the spirit of summer that to have BBQ hotdogs or hamburgers, potato salad, and fruit or jello salad. Serve them some fruit juice in a cup or a smoothie with one of those little umbrellas in it.
With harsh winters like this, St. Louis kids can get out of the winter slump and enjoy their pretend beach.
