Wednesday, Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano continued to spew ash clouds into the sky and international flights were cancelled; US President Obama cut short his trip to Indonesia because of the volcano and left the country a few hours earlier than planned. 191 people have been confirmed dead because of the volcano, and 600 others have been hospitalized and many with burns over most of their body. 350,000 people have been displaced and are living in emergency shelters.
Mount Merapi erupted two weeks ago after laying dormant for many years. The volcano shot clouds of ash, gray soot and debris four miles high, and hot red lava cascaded down the slope of the volcano.
Wednesday, several airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Value Air and Qantas cancelled flights into and out of the Jakarta airport, which is located 270 miles from Merapi.

Mount Merapi has killed over 1,500 people in the last century and has erupted numerous times, and yet several thousand people continue to live nearby. This time, Mount Merapi began erupting on October26, and Friday’s explosion was the largest eruption since the 1870s.

A few weeks ago, several hundred people died after an offshore earthquake and massive tsunami struck Indonesia. Officials expect the final death toll to reach 500. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck offshore and created a 10-foot high tsunami that covered the land and destroyed homes. Over 40,000 people were displaced.
