What's everyone going to be for Halloween this year? I'm going to be your resident DJ, same thing I am every year. Actually, scratch that. Same thing as I am every day.
On that note, here are some spine-tingling indie songs to get you in a spooktastic Halloween mood.
This ethereal song became popular after it was featured on the Twilight soundtrack. What's interesting about that is it means there's one thing about the movie that didn't suck.
You get the sense you're in a haunted martini bar when listening to "Grey Is Old." It's as if the sultry lead female vocals and dark jazzy sax are echoing throughout a sleepless noir night. (Download for free here.)
The hand-clap percussion, barroom piano, and children's choir are a bizarre musical combination, but they're made even more bizarre by the fact that Ryan Gosling is behind the song's heartfelt crooning. However, it's so eminently listenable that if I had to choose between losing my soul, and listening to "Lose Your Soul," I'd have no soul.
Some songs are hauntingly scary, while others are hauntingly beautiful. This song is the latter. And it really couldn't have a more fitting name.
I've been obsessed with EELS ever since I first heard "Fresh Blood" on True Blood. But I can't tell if this track is more spooky or more sexy. Whatever, that's probably why I like it so much.
