The zombie defying independent comics news for Sept. 15th - 17th, 2013!
AMC's "The Walking Dead" gets a spin off!
Image Comics' "The Walking Dead" written and co-created by Robert Kirkman has not only become a major Top 50 seller after over 100 issues, but it has been adapted into a successful TV show at AMC, which is set to debut the show's fourth season next month. Only weeks from that debut, AMC has announced that "The Walking Dead" TV show will get a spin off. This "companion series" will hit the cable airwaves in 2015. It will be co-produced by Kirkman as well as the regular producers for the core TV show, David Alpert and Gale Ann Hurd.
This does run the risk of stretching a brand further than it can go until it breaks. On the other hand, "The Walking Dead" is getting big ratings for AMC and is at its prime both there and in the comic sales front. Given that, now may be the best time to attempt a spin off. After all, TV series such as "CSI", "Star Trek", and "Law & Order" have done well in that regard historically.

"Protectors, Inc." latest creator owned work from JMS' publishing company!
Hot on the heels of "Sidekicks", writer J. Michael Straczynski is continuing to create new comic book franchises under his own label, "Joe's Comics". Called "Protectors, Inc.", it will be drawn by long time veteran artist Gordon Purcell and hit comic book shelves on November 6th. It is a murder mystery revolving around a team of superheroes in a world where super villains don't exist, so suspects have to come from within. JMS and "Joe's Comics" will be on hand at the New York Comic Con this year to offer an exclusive preview issue at the convention.
