"Beetle Bailey" creator turns 90!
It seems every other year, readers of classic newspaper strips seem to get word that another decades long series is coming to an end; recent examples are "Cathy" and "Little Orphan Annie". This week, readers are instead offered positive news regarding one of these timeless four to six panel institutions. Mort Walker celebrated his 90th birthday this week as the creator continues to supervise the comic strip which first hit newspapers in 1950. The creator's three sons have been aiding in the strip since the 1980's as well as others assisting in the scripting of the strip. Walker has vowed to continue to supervise work on his creation until "he is no longer able". "Beetle Bailey" follows the comic exploits of lazy army private Beetle Bailey alongside his dog Otto and the long suffering Sgt. Snorkel. "Beetle Bailey" is still circulated by King Syndicate around the world.
"Saga" wins 2013 Hugo award!
Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' "Saga" has already won a slew of Eisner awards this year at the San Diego Comic Con, and it continues to be a sales juggernaut for Image Comics. At this past weekend's LoneStarCon in Texas, the series and its creators won an even more dignified award. The World Science Fiction Society has awarded the series the 2013 Hugo Award for "best graphic story". Named after "Amazing Stories" pioneer Hugo Gernsback, the award has been offered to the best science fiction stories every year since 1955. The "best graphic story" category, recognizing sci-fi works in comic book form, was first awarded by the society in 2009. It goes without saying that "Saga" is the real deal, recognized by not only comic fans, but fans of good fiction itself.
Mark Waid enters the retail biz!
Longtime comic book writer and creator Mark Waid - currently working on "Daredevil" and "Indestructible Hulk" for Marvel as well as "The Fox" at Archie Comics, "Green Hornet" for Dynamite Comics and "Rocketeer" for IDW Comics, atop being a publisher of Thrillbent digital comics - has donned yet another hat in his illustrious career. Over Labor Day weekend, it was announced that he's become a co-owner of his local comic shop, "Alter-Ego Comics", based in Muncie, IN. The store's original owners, Jason Pierce and Christy Blanch, will remain co-owners and continue to manage the shop.
Waid is hardly the first major comic book creator to be involved in actually running or owning a comic shop himself. DC Comics scion Geoff Johns is co-owner of "Earth-2" at Northridge, California. The most famous example is Kevin Smith, who purchased his local comic shop "Comicology" in Red Bank, New Jersey in 1997 and has since renamed it "Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash" where it is now the setting for podcasts and the reality TV show "Comic Book Men".
