- Image Comics officially turned 20 years old on February 1st, and to celebrate, there are a slew of announcements from the company. The first ever Image Expo, a convention which celebrates Image Comics' 20th anniversary as well as indie comics in general continues to expand their guest list. The latest high profile creator to attend is Ed Brubaker, whose first Image comic series, FATALE, has sold very well for the publisher (http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/01/31/imageexpo-adds-brubaker/). After that announcement, the Image Expo has released their programming schedule for the convention, which takes place in Oakland, California from February 24th to 26th (http://www.imagecomicexpo.com/programming-2/). While some of the panels exist to help promote Image Comics such as Brian K. Vauaghan's SAGA and THE WALKING DEAD, it also includes a Womenthology panel on gender issues in comics as well as a lot of workshops intended to aid creators, from working on scripts to adaptations to alternate media. Image Comics also released some teasers for future comics; one regarding THE WALKING DEAD and a chainsaw (http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/02/03/walking-dead-something-to-fear/), and the other being a Shep Fairey inspired teaser regarding "patience" (http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/02/01/teaser-of-the-day-patience/). Finally, despite only shipping the first of six issues, Nate Simpson's NONPLAYER is being looked at for a film adaptation (http://sciencefiction.com/2012/02/02/jane-goldman-to-adapt-comic-book-nonplayer-for-big-screen/). Screenwriter Jane Goldman stated that Warner Brothers is looking to craft a film adaptation of the series, which revolves around an vast "role playing game" which may or may not take place in an alternate universe. Roy Lee ("THE RING") and David Heyman (the Harry Potter films) are expected to be involved as producers, and Goldman's schedule suggests it could be some time before this project begins production. Still, it seems Hollywood's lack of originality is causing more creators besides Mark Millar to be able to impress a studio right off the bat.
- After roughly three years worth of stories, Mark Waid will be ending IRREDEEMABLE and INCORRUPTIBLE in May 2012 (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/mark-waid-irredeemable-end-120203.html). IRREDEEMABLE is a creator owned series Waid launched at BOOM! Studios in 2009 revolving around a Superman-esque superhero (Plutonian) going bad, and INCORRUPTIBLE is a spin-off revolving around the nemesis of said hero (Max Damage) turning good. Waid became the editor-in-chief of BOOM! Studios in 2007, which made it easier for him to launch a creator owned series there; IRREDEEMABLE has since won an Eisner and Harvey award, and finished a crossover with INCORRUPTIBLE last month. Why end the series now? Waid states that he is being "just stretched thin right now both personally and professionally, and I live in mortal fear that I’m going to overstay my welcome on these books" - Waid is writing DAREDEVIL for Marvel right now, and is rumored to possibly take over for one of their Avengers books after Bendis leaves them in the summer/fall. Waid follows up by stating that he planned organic ends for his series, and is heading towards it organically. Given that both are cult hits, one can imagine BOOM! Studios selling trades of this series' run for many years to come.
