Whether you’re an expecting mother or a family of four, parenting is the most nerve racking duty in life. It’s an ongoing process that takes trial and error. Unfortunately children don’t come with a manual and every child is different. There is no “How to be a good parent,” book, there is however indications of positive parenting.
Rearing a child brings up moments from your childhood. It doesn't matter if you came from a loving or abusive home, you should have a process of deductive reasoning. Any parent will be the first to say they’re not perfect. What did your parents do or did not do? It could be your parents worked too much and never spent time with you. It could also be, your parents never worked, leaving you to fend for yourself. If you didn't like seeing your parents constantly fighting in front of you, make it point to avoid fighting in front of your children. If you liked seeing your parents showing each other love and affection, make sure your children see you do the same.
The rate of nuclear families is decreasing each year but that does not mean the love from parents is also dropping. Being a single mother or father is hard work. You have to play both roles of a parent, it’s stressful. However, you have to realize the responsibility you have chosen. Children look up to their parents as gods. Whether you like it or not you’re a role model. Due to this situation you need to adjust your priorities accordingly.
If you smoke, if you drink, if you have a poor diet, if you’re constantly bringing people home, your children are going to pick that up. A lot of parents, especially young, believe they have a right to act like a teenager or however they did in high school but that is not the case. You have the right to enjoy your life but you have created life that has a right to good one.
There needs to be a level of respect and trust on both ends. You need to respect your child to make their own choices and trust that you've given them enough knowledge to surpass you and not enter the world blindly. As a parent you should put your child before you. As a parent you should be prepared for any situation that can happen. So many children feel as if their parents would not accept them for who they really are. Whether your child ends up being gay, transgender, a jock, a geek, a stay at home mom, a doctor, a Muslim or a Christian, it’s your job to accept them for who they are. You don’t have to agree to their lifestyle just make sure they understand they are representing your household. In the words of Banksy “A lot of parents will do anything for their children except let them be themselves.”
Basically to be a good parent you need love, time, patients and understanding. Do your best and make sure they become their best.
