A 14-year-old Indianapolis teenager was arrested Monday evening in Carmel for stealing a vehicle and resisting law enforcement.
Around 6:00 am, a woman called the Carmel Police Department (CPD) to respond to a stolen vehicle report. The victim told police that she left her 2009 Hyundai Sonata running and unlocked near the 1200 block of Golfview Drive when it was stolen.
Upon investigation, CPD located the stolen vehicle near 126th Street and Rangeline Road. The driver of the stolen vehicle refused to stop resulting in a brief pursuit. The pursuit ended on Sleepy Hollow Lane in Carmel.
The suspect then exited the moving vehicle in an attempt to hide from the police. The vehicle, still in motion, stopped upon driving into landscaping before flipping onto its side. Officers set up a perimeter and used a K9 to search for the suspect.
While searching, 911 operators received a phone call from someone in the area reporting an individual lying in their backyard. Officers canvassed the area. The K9 located and apprehended the suspect.
The suspect is a 14-year-old male from Indianapolis. Police transported the teen to IU North Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The Carmel Police Department provides this tip for vehicles during cold weather:
Be cautious when leaving vehicles running and unattended as thieves search for unattended vehicles that are running and unlocked.
If you see suspicious activity regarding vehicle theft or any other suspicious activity, please contact the police immediately.
