A Children’s Habitat is a Montessori preschool and kindergarten that serves children from the age of eighteen months through six years. While it is located within the Pleasant View Lutheran Church, the school is not affiliated with the church. The school is located on the east side of the Church, at the intersection of 73rd and Hoover streets in the Meridian Hills area of Indianapolis.

The Montessori philosophy of learning is centered around the child – children learn at their own rate and will move on to more difficult concepts as they are ready. Montessori classrooms allow children to engage in activities that interest and engage them. Core tenants of the program include respect for children, learning for learning’s sake, nature, collaboration, growth through mistakes, and a kind and peaceful community.

A Children’s Habitat has four programs – the toddler program is for children aged eighteen months through two years, a preschool for children aged three to six, a kindergarten preparation class for children who are in their second year at Habitat and meet program requirements, and a kindergarten for children who have at least two years of Montessori experience or have instructor permission. The appropriate placement for a child is determined based on the child’s readiness for school as opposed to a birthday cutoff. The school runs on a traditional school year calendar. Children in the toddler program attend school three days a week from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Children in the preschool program attend school five days a week from 8:30-11:30 a.m., with an elective extended day until 1:30 p.m. two days a week. Children in the kindergarten prep and kindergarten programs attend school four days a week from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and one day a week from 8:30 -11:30 a.m. The lead teachers in each classroom are Montessori certified. Lunch is not provided – children must bring a sack lunch.
