Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard just gave a press conference broadcast by WTHR TV outlining the operation plans for the emergency conditions due to the severe winter weather. Ballard declared a Level Orange condition.

Ballard listed the following details:

City and County offices will be closed on Monday.

Ballard asked all schools to close Monday.

Businesses are requested to remain closed until noon Monday unless they can close all day.

There are 17 shelters open around the city. Homeless individuals can request assistance from IndyGo public transportation for rides to the shelters.

Ballard said to check on the elderly including knocking on doors.

He stated that the combination of the heavy snow and the coming below zero temperatures and wind chill temperatures are a deadly combination. All must be extremely careful.

Ballard said that if kids are out playing now they should be brought in after a couple of hours. After that the conditions will be too dangerous for outside activities.

Travel should be restricted to emergency travel only.

Windchill temperatures are now forecast in Central Indiana to be a low as -40 to -50 degrees. The Arctic air will blast through the state close to midnight tonight. The sub-zero conditions will continue for a least 48 hours.
