Indianapolis is well regarded in entrepreneurial circles as a good place to start a business. Couple that with a vibrant and diverse arts community and the formula for a successful international radio station cannot be far behind. That is exactly what one Indy resident has done and his audience is growing.
From his home just west of Indianapolis, Dan Skiba is running one of the world’s most popular heavy metal radio stations, Metal Express. Boasting what is touted as the world’s largest collection of heavy metal and hard rock CD’s (over 15,000) and digital content (over 55,000 tracks), Metal Express is a 24/7 head bangers ball. Available straight from their website or over a variety of streaming services such as Tune in Radio, finding a fix for metal mavens has never been easier.
Dan shared his love of all things metal with the staff of Ovation Audio Video (where I work as a consultant) on a recent visit. After talking about his growing listenership that includes regular visits from not only the US but Canada, Iceland and the UK among others, the crew quickly pulled up Metal Express on the company Sonos machines; a day without metal is now like a day without sunshine.
Metal Express is, however, more than just 24 hour metal. Each day has theme shows that feature pre-metal hard rock from the 1960’s and 70’s, a 1980’s hair-band show or a classic rock block depending on the day. The staff also conducts interviews with luminary heavy metal figures such as Mike Portnoy who conducted an interview with the station in August.
If you like heavy metal, like supporting local business, or are merely curious about Internet radio or streaming music, stop by and listen to Metal Express. You can help a fellow Hoosier while you listen and you never know just what you will hear. Don’t forget to tag them or this article on your social media to help even more.
