The NFL moves fast, even in the off-season. And with rookie mini-camp over, and with organized team activities fast approaching, we're suddenly in the middle of the Indianapolis Colts' 2010 off-season. Before the beginning of OTAs in mid-May, Indy Football Report Editor John Oehser will take a look at the Colts' roster now that the draft and collegiate free-agency is over.
As we move to the latest entry in Indy Football Report's pre-organized team activities look at the Indianapolis Colts – a look at the offensive line – let's quickly examine the latest news from the team.
That's the loss of CB Kevin Thomas.
The Colts announced on Friday that Thomas, who played collegiately at the University of Southern California, had sustained a knee injury in the final practice of the team's 2010 rookie minicamp on April 30-May 2.
The Colts announced that the injury could cause him to miss the 2010 season.
A couple of thoughts on that:
One is that considering how closely guarded the Colts typically are with injuries, if they're saying he could miss the season, there's little chance he won't.
Another is, boy, the Colts could use Tim Jennings now, huh?
And while that's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek shot to all those who constantly criticized the cornerback in four Colts seasons, it's not a stretch to say the Colts are in need of a corner right now.
They currently have three players on the roster with extensive experience at the position – Kelvin Hayden, Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey – and while all three are solid players, Colts President Bill Polian said during the draft a team needed five corners who can play effectively.
After the aforementioned three, the Colts have corners. General Manager Chris Polian spoke highly of Purdue FA cornerback Brandon King after mini-camp, and without question Thomas' injury enhances King's chances of making the team. The same is true of Ray Fisher, selected as a returner from Indiana University but a player who started for the Hoosiers at corner as a senior. Bill Polian said after selecting Hughes he liked his ability as a corner.
Thomas' injury could help Hughes play more of a role than just returner.
