A 16-year-old Indiana teen was arrested on Monday, August 26, 2013, after allegedly putting ground-up rat poison in her parents' coffee grounds, according to the Muncie Star Press.
Reports show that the Portland teen's parents discovered the rat poison in the coffee grounds and immediately reported the incident to the Jay County Sheriff's Department. Fortunately, they did not consume the coffee and were able to detect the poison before doing so. She was picked up by officers at her school, Jay County High School, on Monday, reports the Star Press. She then admitted to the poisoning attempt while being interviewed by police.
Jay County Prosecutor Wesley Schemanuar told the Star Press that she will not be charged with attempted murder. If she were to be charged with this felony, this would result in an automatic waiver into adult court. Rather, the teen will be prosecuted as a juvenile.
The teen is being held currently at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center in Muncie. Due to the case being a juvenile matter, the teen's name is not being released nor are any details surrounding the case. All juvenile proceedings in Indiana are held private to the public.
