Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly Backs Gay Marriage After All

The Indianapolis LGBT community has reason to celebrate. One of our senators, Democrat Joe Donnelly, reiterated his support of LGBT rights.

On his Facebook page he wrote,

“In recent years, our country has been involved in an important discussion on the issue of marriage equality. While serving in the House of Representatives, I had the opportunity to act on a core belief of mine: we are a stronger country when we draw on the strengths of all Americans. I voted to repeal ‘don't ask, don't tell’ and was an original supporter of the bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against someone in the workplace because of their sexual orientation. It is also for that reason that I oppose amending either Indiana’s or our nation’s constitution to enshrine in those documents an ‘us’ and a ‘them,’ instead of a ‘we.’ With the recent Supreme Court arguments and accompanying public discussion of same-sex marriage, I have been thinking about my past positions and votes. In doing so, I have concluded that the right thing to do is to support marriage equality for all.”

On the post, comments left were mostly in support of Donnelly. One person said, "You're going to get a lot of attention, good and bad. Hang in there. This is courageous (even if a bit slow in coming). I hope that more politicians listen to the community's stories and come to the same conclusion. Good luck and thank you."

Another sentiment presented often was that this was opportunistic. One commenter said, "Regardless of my opinion on the subject his change is for his benefit ONLY. His opinion hasn't changed only his desire to be elected."

At the time of this writing, the post had over 1,200 likes and over 500 shares on Facebook.

Joe Donnelly lives in Granger, Indiana, and is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He practiced law before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives three times and to the U.S. Senate in 2012.
