Every state has stories of hauntings in local schools. Indiana has quite a few. None of the stories of these hauntings have been proven, but they are still great stories. How cool would it have been to attend a haunted high school? I think it would have been great!
The high school in Shoals has a haunted gym. Story says that there are people buried underneath the gym. Reports of activity are things moving by themselves, doors slamming, and tapping is heard on the walls. Washington High School in Pekin, IN is haunted by an unknown spirit. A bloody handprint can be seen in the gym. The lights in the halls and bathrooms turn on and off by themselves. In Loogootee, IN the gym attached to their high school is haunted by the spirit of a boy who fell from the upper part of the gym while running laps and died. Students often hear someone running laps followed by a loud bang on the floor.
The high school in Leo is haunted by the ghost of a student who never even attended this school. This school had hired a new drama teacher, who had a student die during one of his shows. When he came to this school the ghost followed. At the high school in Jeffersonville, IN there are stories that it is haunted by an unkown woman. She is said to like to move things and will occasionally hit some students. There is also the story of a construction worker that haunts the building. Some students have seen him walking the grounds.
Decatur Central High School is said to be haunted by the ghosts of 5 female students who were tragically killed by a drunk driver who ran into the auditorium in 1977. On the anniversary of the accident some students report the smell of burnt rubber and have seen the lights go out. Others have reported seeing a female crying on the stairs in the auditorium. Cathedral High School used to be a private boarding school (Ladywood High School) and was run by Catholic nuns. Loretto Hall housed the students on campus, some have seen candles burning in the windows of the attic, someone has been seen walking in the halls, and a nun has been seen here as well.
Highland High School is said to be haunted by the ghost Bobby Haymaker. He was a student on the basketball team and died suddenly in the gym. He is heard running laps and playing basketball in the gym. Hebron High School is haunted by a female student who killed herself in the 1930s after being stood up on prom night. Some say that her spirit can still be seen swinging from the rope late at night. Gavit High School located in Hammond, IN has a haunting that only occurs at midnight. A human figure is seen walking on the roof. Windows are known to shut on their own and there are stories of other figures being seen walking inside the building and screams have been heard.
Griffith High School you can see a ghostly face in the girl's bathroom. Rumor has it that it is the ghost of a girl who killed herself there. There are stories of another student that died in the library and likes to move the chairs. The story at Northside High School is that a Miami Indian tribe cheif tried to stop the construction of this school and now hauntsthe area. A former student also haunts the school and is seen walking on the track or standing in the gym. Several janitors have seen the ghost of a former janitor in the basement where he was said to have a heart attack. There is also a construction worker who died during construction of the school is also seen here.
At Snider High School you can ghost hunt here. You might see the ghost of a girl that supposedly died in the swimming pool. After her death the school filled in the pool. However there is no proof of this story, but some students claim to hear a girl screaming and crying in the early morning. In Fort Wayne, IN at Carroll High School there are not any hauntings, but a strange curse. Rumors tell of a school cursed in such a way that a student is said to die every year and must come back and haunt the school.
In the gym of the Crown Point High School the lights flicker, basketballs move on their own, strange noises are heard inside, and transparent figures are seen walking on the catwalk in the auditorium. At Columbus North High School in the 1800s, Mikey was killed by a horse and buggy. Where he was killed is now the home of the new auditorium and the boy's ghost can be seen in the auditorium and walking on the catwalk and is said to play with the lights.
At Charlestown High School some students were messing around on the catwalk of the auditorium, one girl pushed another playfully and she fell off the catwalk to her death. She can be heard walking around the stage and laughing behind the stage. The spanish teacher at Austin High School died in an auto accident. She can be seen walking through the halls. At Old Anderson High School in the old gym, it is haunted by a student who was raped and killed. Screams are heard and things are thrown.
As I said these are local legends and some folklore. There are no facts to substantiate these claims of paranormal activity. Some interesting stories and rumors that will make you wonder how these stories even get started.
