Indiana Jones comes to the Davis Art Center compliments of Dr. Sketchy (Photos)

Outside the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center tonight, Dr. Sketchy will be on hand from 7-9 p.m. The Dr. is bringing Indiana Jones for the pleasure of sketchers. The Temple of Doom archeologist will be portrayed by model and aspiring actress Alexandra Holmes.

Dr. Sketchy provides models attired in intriguing costumes who assume exaggerated poses for sketchers to capture on paper. But there’s a catch. The muses only hold each pose for several minutes, forcing sketchers to work quickly. There’s no time for a detailed, full-blown drawing. The trick is for sketchers to focus on big picture subjects like mood, character and the inner spirit of the muse rather than on trying to get all the details right.

By compressing session times into five and ten minute increments, participants gain in just a few short hours experience it would take weeks to glean in a conventional classroom setting.

“Our Muse for the evening will be Alex Holmes modelling as everyone’s favorite whip-cracking, pistol packing, fedora-wearing archaeologist, Dr Indiana Jones!” reports organizer Heathyre Perara. An aspiring actress and Barbizon model, Holmes has assumed past Art Walk roles as a Steam Punk time traveller, Alice from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, Jack from Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas, an Anime-style Lolita, and Robin, the Batman’s Boy Wonder. Last month, Alex assumed a role inspired by Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

“I like making my face and body almost tell a story within the picture,” remarks Alex, who’s been modelling since she was eleven. “I love the crazy photos that get me in odd positions in a weird place,” which is why she’s the perfect fit for Dr. Sketchy and the Davis Art Center Art Walk crowd.

“This will be a free event but I will be putting out a tip jar so anything you can throw in will go toward paying the model and the extra paper/pencil supplies as well as a portion to the Art Center,” adds Perara. ”We will also be giving away prizes as well as having an online contest for anyone who posts their art and photos from the evening on our Facebook Wall….”
