Indian Summer grips the Midwest

"Indian Summer" is the name given to those autumns into which the warm tendrils of summer extend unusually deeply. With winter's official start only days away, some of those summery tendrils have made one last, futile stand against the cold and snow that will soon arrive.

On Monday afternoon, friends Matt Sloan (l.), Miranda van Winkle (c.) and Tony McGuinnes, all of Louisville, Ky., called a quick time-out to pose for a memento of the spring-like weekend. They'll be back soon enough, when temperatures are not nearly so hospitable.

Paoli Peaks remains open for skiing all week. Saturday, Dec. 19, marks the official start of its 2009-'10 ski season.
