Police in India said today that they’ve launched an extensive manhunt for those responsible for raping and killing three young girls, all sisters, aged 5 to 11, in the most recent of a horrific string of violent sexual crimes aimed against women and children in that country, according to The Daily News.
On Feb. 14, the sisters had gone missing from school. Their three lifeless bodies were found days later in a well in their village located in the Bhandara district.
The family of the girls and concerned villagers from the area have been strongly protesting the police’s ineffective measures in investigating the case.
… enraged villagers forced shops to close, burned tires and blocked a national highway passing through the area for several hours on Wednesday, demanding justice.
The mother, whose name was not released, is quoted as saying "the police did not take the case seriously and did nothing for two day."
One of the police officers involved in the investigation was suspended for “not acting promptly.”
The ongoing string of sexually violent attacks in India have come to the forefront of the public consciousness beginning with the highly publicized gang rape of a woman on a crowded bus in New Delhi on Dec. 16.
That woman, and her badly beaten male companion, was dumped naked in the streets from that bus and later died from her injuries.
Renewed protests from the Indian citizenry have prompted the Indian government to at the very least pass some new laws in an effort to help protect the innocent.
The newest in a package of laws passed by the government increased the jail time for rape from the previous sentence of seven years, to a new minimum of 10 years, and a maximum of 20.
It also provides for the death penalty in extreme cases of rape that result in death or leave the victim in a coma. It has also made voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law.
