Jarrod Greengrass, Lana Schocko and Clarissa Pettibone were all at the Indian Summer festival at Summerfest in Milwaukee on Sunday. They were giving out information about the Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center located at 1711 South 11th Street in Milwaukee.
Schocko said the clinic is "open to every ethnic group with insurance or without insurance." When asked about opening a dental clinic Schocko said "we are only allocated so much money and its just not in our budget."
Pettibone also explained why they don't have a dental clinic. "There is limited space there and that is why there is no dental clinic. We would like a dental clinic." Right now Schocko does dental referrals to a place called Seton.
The ladies explained that the Indian Health Center has a yearly fundraiser and had a card with information about the upcoming event. The 9th Annual Red Shawl Gala is being held on Saturday April 5, 2014. The event is a dinner and silent auction.
"Menominee has their own dental clinic and the Ho-Chunks have dental and optical" Pettibone explained and that if they wanted faster service and were from Milwaukee Native Americans sometimes end up going to those clinics to get dental care.
One day maybe the Indian Health Center in Milwaukee will have enough money to set up a dental clinic.
