Winter may be in full swing, but some exciting concerts in February that showcase Indian classical music and dance will offer warmth for the spirit.
Thyagaraja Aradhana celebrations at Chinmaya Mission Boston
On Feb. 2, Chinmaya Mission Boston commemorates Saint Thyagaraja, a doyen of Carnatic music, with the organization's second annual Thyagaraja Aradhana celebrations at its Andover center. The event aims to capture the magic typically associated with the traditional Thyagaraja Aradhana festivities in Thiruvaiyaru in Tamil Nadu. The celebrations will begin at 9 a.m. with Sri Rama abhishekam to be accompanied by South Indian classical music performances by local teachers and students. A full-length concert will follow renditions of Utsava Sampradaya kritis and Thyagaraja's Pancharatna kritis. Look forward to a featured concert at 4 p.m. by locally renowned musician Tara Bangalore and her students to conclude the day-long celebrations.
An evening of South Indian classical music and dance at Multicultural Arts Center
Expect a fine confluence of music and dance when acclaimed Bharatanayam dancer Mesma Belsare teams with Carnatic musician Deepti Navaratna for a concert on Feb. 7. Scheduled for 7:30-9 p.m. at the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, the concert will use South Indian classical music and dance to explore the many facets of love, based on compositions from 17th to the 19th centuries. Murali Balachandran on the mridangam and Soumya Ramanathan on the nattuvangam complete the musical team. The program is supported by The Cambridge Arts Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
"Samhita – Naada Nritya Sangama" at Keefe Tech Auditorium
Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music will be the focus again when leading Indian classical music and dance teachers from the New England area join forces for "Samhita – Naada Nritya Sangama," on Feb. 23 to raise funds for the Cancer Institute(WIA) Foundation, Inc. The event will showcase local talents in South Indian classical music and dance. Vocalist Aparna Balaji and students will present Carnatic music, while Chinmaya Boston Artistic Director Durga Krishnan and her students will perform on the veena. Ranjani Saigal, founder of Eastern Rhythms School of Dance, and her students will render performances in Bharatanatyam. "Samhita – Naada Nritya Sangama" is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Keefe Tech Auditorium in Framingham.
