For Hindus Diwali which commemorates the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshamana from 14 years of exile and the killing of demon king Ravana is one of their most important festivals.

Hindu families celebrate Diwali by performing traditional activities in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 B.C. For Sikhs, Diwali is celebrated as Bandhi Chhor Diwas (The Celebration of Freedom) to celebrate the release of their sixth guru from prison Guru Hargobind who also freed 52 Hindu kings held captive with him by a Mughal Emperor in 1619.
