After an unfortunate fire back in June, the non-profit’s headquarters at 585 Broad Street has been shut down, believed to be, indefinitely. But, with the help of Newark artists and The Newark Arts Council, Index will be hosting their annual exhibition Intersection 2013.
Recognizing the talent of local artists, Intersection will revolve around the Newark Arts Council’s Open Doors event.
Intersection 2013 is scheduled to take place at 27 Mix, a premier Newark hotspot for those into hip nightlife and great bar food. The event will gradually move on to the Kilkenny Alehouse, located a mere block away, which will feature works by over 30 Newark artists. Intersection 2013 has also employed some awesome bands (The Big Drops, Gypsy Wig & Chimes, to name a few) to play at both locations.
Once home to groups like The Newark Print Shop, Oculus Art Collective and Beez Boutique, Index Art Center’s Broad Street location was a powerhouse for innovative and talented Newark artists to gather, share ideas and, most importantly, make meaningful art. There’s no word on whether or not the location will be reopening anytime soon, but, until then, the Index Art Center can depend on the kindness of the local arts community.
The opening reception is scheduled for October 12.
