Atlanta Local Food Initiative’s annual event brings edible fruit trees and berry bushes to your community this weekend!

The Atlanta Local Food Initiative’s (ALFI) Incredible, Edible, Grow-It-Yourself Fruit Tree, Vine & Berry Bush Sale offers a unique opportunity to buy fruiting trees, bushes, and vines that will thrive in a Georgia climate with minimal maintenance. The fruit tree and berry bush sale is the annual fundraiser for ALFI, a network committed to growing a local food system that nourishes the people, environment, economy, and communities in metro Atlanta.

Fruit trees, berry bushes, and fruiting vines make attractive, cost-effective, and low maintenance additions to your landscape, and their fruit will feed your family for decades!

Varieties available will include: apple, fig, kiwi, paw paw, pear, persimmon, plum, pomegranate, nectarine, hazelnut, blueberry, raspberry, muscadine, and MORE! The varieties offered in the ALFI Sale are carefully selected by experts for their ability to thrive in the local climate and grow well in urban environments.

You can view the list of the plants that will be offered this Saturday - complete with descriptions and growing info. This will help you decide which plants are right for your yard!

All of the apple varieties in the sale are semi-dwarf this year, which means you need less space to grow an abundant harvest of apples! Want an evergreen to keep your landscape green year round? Try a pineapple guava! Only have room to plant in a pot? Try some strawberries or blueberry bushes! Want a fun native variety? Plant paw paws or an elderberry!

Even if you’ve never planted a garden, fruit trees and berry bushes are a great way to grow your own delicious food with minimal maintenance. If you’re thinking about planting any trees or bushes in your landscape, why not plant something that will grow delicious fruit?

The sale also provides an opportunity for schools and community organizations to earn fruit trees, vines and berry bushes for their group. The new Fruit Tree Challenge rewards each registered group with a credit when their supporters make purchases through the sale.

Shoppers also have the option to directly donate to the ALFI Orchard Project, which installs school and community orchards around Atlanta.

In the past 4 years, 14 orchards have been installed at Title I schools and community gardens around the Atlanta area; these orchards provide a jumping off point for students, parents, teachers, and community members to actively connect with and have access to fresh, sustainably grown food. Recipients are Wesley International Academy, Benjamin E. Mays High School, and the North DeKalb Mall Garden, an affiliate of the Global Growers Network. Over 75 fruit trees and berry bushes will be installed!

Want to help plant? The Orchard Project will kick off immediately after the sale. Join Robby Astrove and other dedicated volunteers and help get these trees in the ground. Contact fruittrees@atlantalocalfood.org for more information.

“The ALFI Fruit Tree Sale a great opportunity for adding unique treats to your landscape,” says Julie Self, Executive Director of ALFI. “My family has enjoyed eating apples, blueberries, pomegranates, and raspberries from trees and bushes that we planted from the ALFI Fruit Tree sale. There’s nothing better than taking your kids out in the yard to find a healthy and delicious snack.”

All pre-orders will be ready for pick up on Saturday January 25, 2014 at the North DeKalb Mall, and additional plants will be available for on-site purchase. Experts will be on hand during the sale and pickup to provide guidance about raising healthy, fruitful trees, vines and bushes. Planting demonstrations will also take place throughout the afternoon at the North DeKalb Mall Community Garden.
