In addition to the return of your favorite prime time distraction, fall brings with her a frenzy of the seasons latest fashion trends. While bringing the newest craze to your wardrobe is a no brainer, incorporating them into your interior design is a Savvy must.
The concept of opposites attracting is new by no means, but none the less, it’s resulting in some pretty fab interiors. My favorite fashion trend this season will leave you channeling your inner Material Girl to create some very unlikely fabric combinations. Lace is very chic and feminine and is currently showing up in all kinds of apparel. Why not invite this fancy filigree fabric into your interiors in the way of a trim on your existing sheers or on a few new toss pillows. Now to make this look new and not resembling your grandmother’s tablecloth, pair it with a more casual denim or a lively print. Nothing exudes femininity quite like lace so what better opposite to switch up your look than pairing it with an edgy studded leather or embossed vinyl. Just picture lace leggings with a chunky military boot, for your fashion inspiration.
Also gracing the runways this fall was an obscene amount of texture combinations. This particular fall fad, however, is the one with lasting potential. Keep in mind this Savvy Rule of Thumb- Good design is timeless. So while other trends may come and go from season to season, I try to apply them to my interiors in a way that will minimize the strain on the pocket book while providing design longevity. We see marriages of lush velvets, shiny metallics and a plethora of fur that will leave your savvy little design minds on texture overload! As an interior designer, I will take texture over pattern every single time. It will allow you to enjoy your newly designed space for a much longer duration than a frenzy of patterns that will tire quickly.
Your home's accessories include, but are certainly not limited to, the lamps, toss pillows, area rugs and the menagerie of decorations that embellish the walls and surfaces throughout your room. This leads me to my final fall fashion furor, bold chunky jewelry. Accessorize your homes as you would a really great outfit. A singular bold statement piece, like a chunky necklace for instance, is all that is needed to make your ensemble pop. The same scenario holds true in your interior design. Allow one great decoration to be the focal point of your accessory assortment. This statement piece may be a trio of over-scaled metallic floor vases beside your fireplace, leaving the more predictable accessory space, the mantel, free of adornment. As a designer, I always try to select the unexpected design choices that will, ultimately, result in the biggest “wow factor” finish.
So, the next time you find yourself racking your little design diva brains for interior design inspiration, you need to look no further than the latest fashion mag perched upon your coffee table.
