Today was the opening of this new facility next to the Washington home on the Mount Vernon estate.
If I were going to the east coast this year-end, one place I would really like to visit is The Fred W. Smith National LIbrary for the study of George Washington at Mount Vernon. Have you been there? Does it interest you? If so, visit the website, and look for all of the key details you need to know. Although it operates with normal hours during the week, Monday-Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, it is closed on Saturday, Sunday, and all Major Holidays. This will make a difference, depending on your other agenda items, of course. The web site has a nice map, so you can see where the Library in located, along with good directions for arriving from all directions, with more maps.
Be sure to review the Library FAQs for a lot of useful information that will help you know what you can and cannot likely be able to accomplish on your visit. If you are going to get the most benefit from your visit, in the time you have, planning ahead is especially important. One final reminder. Do not try to do everything on one visit. Focus your research or search agenda on just a few specifics so that you be successful and not leave disappointed.
What heritage (historical, cultural, natural) sites will you visit during your year-end holiday travels this year? Certainly, each of us will make our plans based first on family and such requirements, but as I read regularly on Facebook of visits different folks make to family and friends, and attending conferences in various locations, more and more people are planning ahead to be able to visit, as well, a specific museum, a repository of significant history records, or lake or mountain range or prairie that may have significance to our heritage interests. So, you can certainly do it, as well, with adequate pre-planning.
