Inaugural luncheon weighs in heavy: tops over 3,000 calories (Photos)

As President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second presidential term, it was followed by a fancy luncheon held by the Joint Congressional Committee and hosted by Senator Charles “Charles” Schumer. This luncheon consisted of three courses.

The three course meal does not support the recommended daily allowance from the USDA of 2,000 calories. This inaugural luncheon tops the scale at 3,027 not including the alcoholic beverages of wine presented with all three meals.

This luncheon also does not support Michelle Obamas’ initiative on obesity. However we all splurge from time to time but with the two inaugural balls still to come this evening the Obamas’ will be adding a lot more than 3,000 calories to their diet.

Let take a look at the inaugural lunch menu and see why it topped over 3,000 calories.

The first course was lobster with a clam chowder cream sauce and sautéed spinach and sweet potato hay. Well the cream sauce has cream and butter which is fattening and the sweet potato hay is lightly fried.

The main course consisted of bison, butternut squash puree, wild huckleberry reduction, baby golden beets, green beans, potato horseradish cake and red cabbage with strawberry preserve. This meal overall is healthy as bison is leaner than beef, and lower in saturated fat than salmon, chicken and beef.

Bison contains only 2.4g of fat so that’s low in calories and fat. The reduction has sugar and the strawberry preserve adding to the caloric count. The potato horseradish is fried similar to latkes. This definitely adds to the caloric intake.

The final course is desert which included apple pie, ice cream, cinnamon crumble, caramel maple sauce, cheese and honeycomb. This desert is loaded with the sweetness of sugar from the cinnamon crumble, ice cream and caramel sauce.

The inaugural luncheon did use wholesome ingredients from across the states, in support of Michelle Obamas’ farm to table initiatives. However it was a costly inaugural luncheon as far as calories 3,027 to be exact not including the three wines presented with each meal which would put this inaugural luncheon to close to 4,000 calories.

Since Michelle Obama is an active first lady, the 3,000 calorie meal won’t do much to hurt her waistline, as she has prepared for this day of festivities with diet and exercise.
