In This Moment guitarist Chris Howorth on Blood and unannounced dates

In This Moment is just now pushing their latest single entitled ‘Whore’ of their highly successful album ‘Blood’. While they continue to be road warriors and the bands star continues to rise, I was able to get guitarist and founding member Chris Howorth on the phone for a little chat as the band gets ready to hit the road for Hellpop Tour.

Fronted by the beautiful and talented Maria Brink, the group has seen some personnel changes as happens so often, but they simply refocused, recharged, and created what arguably may be their best effort yet with ‘Blood’. The new single has already gotten attention for her naked pose and its title; yet most people really need to get a grip on what the song is about and the meaning behind it before jumping around like a bunch of hyped-up beans. The song is about empowerment with Maria Brink creating the term 'Women Honoring One another Rising Eternally'

"I decided to pose nude for the visual art for 'Whore' to evoke a raw vulnerable emotion. The word WHORE written down my back and the dunce cap symbolize me placing myself on the stake for those who are suffering, and I can only hope to encourage at least one person to find the self worth and love they deserve to transcend out of a painful situation into a beautiful one. It is about finding our power and taking a stand. We are resilient beings and need to realize our incredible strengths. I will not bow down to others perceptions of me. I will only rise in the name of art, love and music." –Maria Brink

Interview with Chris Howorth

Hey Chris, thanks for taking the time today. The past 14 months have been busy for you all.

Thanks for having me man. We HAVE been everywhere! It’s been really exciting and fulfilling on the Blood Tour. One awesome experience after another, we’ve done all the touring before, but with this album and the way it was received and the success it’s had it has just been really gratifying and extra good.

I saw you on the UPROAR Festival 2012 at the NYS Fair, awesome show; still on the road and still going strong?

Yeah we are just ending a two week break. We are getting ready to start the Hellpop Tour which is a headlining tour. We are really excited for it!

Your album ‘Blood’ debuted that month of the UPROAR show, debuted at #15 on Billboard, and keeps rolling along with the release and push of the song, video, and message behind ‘Whore’; can you talk about all that?

We’ve done a lot of great stuff but never really had the success like we have had with Blood. Being number 15 and even now still selling so well; it’s just been a gradual process of breaking down the goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. Each single has been bigger than the last and with ‘Whore’ we expect it to be our biggest song yet and it’s just getting started.

The band went through some changes from ‘Beautiful Tragedy’ and ‘Prayers’ to ‘Adrenalize’ and now ‘Whore’; the band has also grown in that time, can you talk about that?

From the very beginning of the band until now; we’ve had some changes, it’s like a family or a marriage. Sometimes people change or things change and you’re not all wanting the same things or on the same page. Throughout our career we had a couple of bass player changes and then recently we lost our founding guitar player and drummer and they were with us from the very beginning. Maria and I started the band but they were with us from the very beginning so when they left we were like ‘oh, what are we going to do?’ We realized that we weren’t done and that we knew what In This Moment was and what we wanted it to be and how we always wanted it to be anyways. So, we just forged forward and got some new guys for the live band and wrote a great record and kind of proved to everyone that we weren’t done.

Maria Brink is always at the top of everyone’s ‘females of rock’ list regardless of if it’s about the music, the voice, or the look; how is it working with her?

It’s awesome man. When I met her I was reluctant to play with her; not because a sexist thing but I had never been in a band with a girl before! When I first heard her sing I was like holy crap this girl has something, and we’ve been working on it ever since and that was like eight years ago. And we created this awesome thing. I can only say good things about working with Maria. She’s super talented; all her emotions and life experiences all comes through when she sings; people can really see that when she sings that it’s not contrived, it’s real.

Your guitar playing may be some of the most underrated in metal right now, what is your background in music?

Totally like 80’s metal stuff, that’s what I grew up on. I know there was the whole Glam/Thrash metal war, but I didn’t care I liked them all. Ozzy is the godfather of heavy metal and every single note he sings is full of melody. So melody and heaviness go hand in hand. I’m not into that whole overly technical sweeping type of stuff I’m more into the melodic shredding for the song type thing. It’s all about the songs.

You guys are booked until the end of November; when do you catch your breath?

We’re booked through November and then we take a break for Christmas. It’s unannounced yet but there is going to be a second leg of Hellpop Tour through January and then we start working on the next record.

So, after such a successful album and extensive touring; what’s next?

We’re starting to work on stuff but we’ll get to work and hopefully have it done by July or August of next year.

I remember I emailed back and forth with you several years back when the band had a design contest for a t-shirt and I shot it out to all the ITT Technical Institute campuses, I think some guy from a Colorado school actually won.

I remember the contest and everything man (Laughs) That was like when we were getting signed man so thanks for being there since the beginning man!

Last but not least, what would you like to say to the fans and readers out there?

If you’ve heard of us before thank you so much for supporting us and checking us out, come to a show it’s different every time and if you’ve never heard of us, check us out!
