In the spirit of the holidays, donate to your local animal shelter

During the holiday season, people are often overcome with feelings of generosity and good will toward their fellow men and women. This year, why not share the love with animals as well?

Wintertime happens to be one of the most taxing times of year for animal shelters, as more and more pets are dumped on their doorsteps in times of economic stress and plummeting temperatures result in a surge in the admission of stray animals. As a result, animal shelters should not go unnoticed this holiday season, when you are considering ways to help those in need.

The items most requested by animal shelters include the following:

  • Blankets/towels
  • Cat & dog toys
  • Collars/leashes
  • Heating pads
  • Dry dog & cat food
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Distilled water

Many shelters will also need extra hands during this busy time of year, and even donating an hour of your time will go a long way for both the shelter staff and the animals.

If you'd like to learn more about how you can help your local animal shelter, visit the Petfinder website to view contact information for the shelter in your area. By simply placing a phone call and inquiring about their needs, you'll be making a world of difference this holiday season.
