Lin-Manuel Miranda, the composer and original star of In The Heights, the musical now playing at The Pantages in Hollywood, sat at the balcony of the Hard Rock Café a week ago for what he thought would be a meal and a subdued press event. He was surprised, however, when the familiar notes of his song “96,000” – part of the In The Heights repertoire – began to blast over Universal City Walk. His eyes grew large in disbelief as over 300 participants popped up from all directions of the plaza and gathered just below his balcony to do a coordinated dance in a surprise “Flash Mob” meant to welcome him to Los Angeles.
It had all been planned by Broadway/LA at the Pantages Theatre and Flash Mob America, an outfit that coordinates and documents organized spontaneous outbursts around the country. Miranda showed his emotion and expressed his appreciation in word and deed by joining the crowd downstairs for pictures and greetings. (See his reaction on video below.)
In The Heights will run at The Pantages until July 25. Read more about the show HERE.
