The novel begins in 1933, when William E. Dodd a professor from Chicago becomes the American ambassador in Berlin.
While Dodd brings his wife, daughter Martha, and son with him to Germany, the book focuses primarily on the mild mannered Dodd, and his wild daughter Martha.
In the beginning of there stay in Germany, Martha cannot help but be swept up in the glamorous parties, enthusiasm, and prominence of the Nazi’s, as Dodd himself seems to be blinded to the persecution that is occurring around him.
During Ambassador Dodd’s stay he interacts socially, and politically with several high levels Nazi’s including Goebbels, Himmler, Goring and even Hitler himself. Meanwhile daughter Martha is engaged in romantic liaisons with everyone from high ranking SS officials to communists.
Before long the glamour of Nazi Germany fades, as attacks on Jews escalate, and an alarmed Dodd receives little support, or concern from the State Department back home.
Will Dodd and his family be able to survive in a dark and tense new Germany, or will Hitler’s vision prove too much?
Bursting with tension, romance, intrigue, politics, and history, ‘In the Garden of Beasts,’ is a captivating, brilliant and devastating tale of one family’s journey through the sinister world of Nazi Germany.
