Do there seem to be more sales calls and messages on the phone despite the ‘Do Not Call List’ restrictions? How about the receipt of mail scams and unwanted mail or stress related to the Affordable Care Act, failure to fund the government or lifting the debt ceiling? Ah-h-h-h-h-h!! (See Munch The Scream Canvas Print - iCanvasART.com).
There is a lot to make a person irritable these days, not to mention seasonal affective reactions to fall, rain or overcast skies. And the news never seems to be good anymore, etc., etc. For a jag of self pity and grumpiness realize no one will feel sorry for you but you so once in awhile is all right. Irritability is a little more difficult and displacement is not really an option unless it is recognized. Then it is all right to kick a pillow but not the cat or the burly person ahead of you in line.
Another favorite peeve is the perennially cheerful person, especially in the morning before coffee or before the chance to acclimate or recover from the night before. It may be a good time to fetch something forgotten or take a quick break (unless reputation precedes or rules forbid) – same with computer games or burying one’s head in despair. At one time ‘primal scream’ therapy used to be all the rage but here would not be an option. (It may be a default for some in dealing with traffic however.)
In 1807 the poet William Wordsworth decried materialism and the state of life in part with the following:
The world is too much with us; late and soon
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; -
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
Perhaps an overstatement but some concerns do seem ageless, and compatriots ample.Tried and true coping strategies differ but can include faith, loved ones, or perhaps random acts of kindness. A little walk or poetry, meditation or music can be among a number of tools for coping. The trick may be just remembering they are there and recognizing when they might be needed or better yet, incorporating a few in daily life.
