In season fruits and vegetables for January

Trying to find quality tomatoes or corn in the dead of winter is tough to accomplish.  The further out of season a fruit or vegetable may be: the further it has to travel to get to your plate.  The clock is ticking as those fresh tomatoes make their way across the hemisphere, and with each day that powerful legume loses it's nutrition and flavor. 

So to ensure the tastiest, most nutrient packed meals try including vegetables that are in season for the current month.

January Seasonal Produce:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Leeks
  • Grapefruits
  • Lemons
  • Oranges
  • Papaya
  • Tangerine

Looking up recipes for some of these rare choices can be a fun challenge, and also helps introduce more meals to your menu.  For ideas on how to use and prepare leeks check out the Food Network for lots of great recipes. 

Also try a Papaya Smoothie:

  • 1/2 papaya (peeled and seeded)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple-orange juice
  • 1 cup vanilla yogurt
