Perhaps even before the bodies of the slain were removed from the Washington Navy Yard Monday, the forcible citizen disarmament advocates were in full blood-dancing vulture form. This is precisely in accord with the "manual" of "gun control," first reported by Seattle Gun Rights Examiner Dave Workman, and later covered here. So, for example, the forcible citizen disarmament "playbook" offers the following bit of advice to gun prohibitionists, to be followed in the aftermath of a high-profile shooting incident, a time, the manual says, that "creates a unique climate for our communications efforts":
There can be a tendency to adopt a quiet “wait and see” attitude when a high-profile gun violence incident happens. The truth is, the most powerful time to communicate is when concern and emotions are running at their peak. While we always want to be respectful of the situation, a self-imposed period of silence is never necessary.
"In the wake of these kind of incidents, the trick is to move quickly," said Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center, one of the gun control groups working with McCarthy's office.
That would be Congresswoman Carolyn "What's a Barrel Shroud" McCarthy, who had long before learned that "trick," as illustrated by her introduction of a magazine ban bill within hours of the Virginia Tech massacre, meaning, obviously, that she had written the bill previously and had just waited to spring her ghoulish ambush as soon as a sufficiently high-profile shooting occurred.
Of course, aside from the disgusting, carrion crow opportunism inherent to this sprinting for the nearest microphone and TV camera to push one's "gun control" agenda within minutes or hours of any high profile shooting, there's another problem. In their haste, they often try to score political points using media reports that frequently turn out to be wrong--sometimes wildly so ("AR-15 shotgun," CNN?).
Monday's Washington Navy Yard shooting, and the pervasive initial reports (very pervasive, as this Washington Post article illustrates) that the shooter used an AR-15 "assault weapon," exemplify this phenomenon. With AR-15s being both the most popular centerfire rifle in the nation, several years running, and the gun prohibitionists' most cherished gun ban fantasy, "gun control" advocates, per standard operating procedure, wasted no time.
A press release yesterday from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, for example:
And he is reported to have employed the weapon that has now become the choice tool of cop killers, mass murderers, and insurrectionists nationwide—the AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle.
. . .
Our message to federal and state legislators: Strengthen and expand background checks for gun purchases and ban the military-style assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines so frequently used by mass killers.
On CNN, Piers Morgan loudly gnashed his teeth about the continued legality of AR-15s.
Writing for the New York Daily News, "progressive" sports writer (perhaps he should stick to sports) Mike Lupica was very likely foaming at the mouth when he wrote, "AR-15 is the rifle for the 'sport' of hunting humans":
They call semiautomatics like this sport rifles [one cannot help but wonder if he supports the pending California legislation to ban hunting rifles like the Browning BAR as "assault weapons"]. You bet. Mostly for the sport of killing innocent people, and killing them fast.
One problem. The shooter is now reported to have brought only a pump-action shotgun to his massacre, with any other guns (including the phantom AR-15, if it exists at all) used for his evil mission having been taken from his victims after he shot them. In other words, the entire subject of "assault weapons" has suddenly become useless for the people who had been working so hard to exploit these 12 victims for the gun ban agenda.
Oh, and by the way, he bought the shotgun at a gun shop, complete with background check (not to mention that his background was no obstacle to him obtaining a "Secret" security clearance--one can hardly argue that a man worthy of being trusted with our nation's military secrets cannot be trusted with a pump-action shotgun), so the other side is not getting any help on their other favorite subject, either.
In the end, though, the anti-Second Amendment jihadists are unlikely to be too embarrassed by their AR-15 misfire. As we discussed yesterday, after all, they are not at all above deliberately lying for their agenda, so they're hardly likely to be very troubled about having pushed a false narrative before they'd realized it was false.
