Syfy Channel is a science fiction geek's dream come true. The original series Eureka is a huge reason the network is so popular. As Season 4 reaches its midpoint, Syfy offers up a marathon of the first half of the season, airing today and leading up to tonight's mid-season finale.
If you're not familiar with the sci-fi action dramedy, here's a brief synopsis: Eureka is a small town in Oregon, that's operated by Global Dynamics, a high tech corporation that is overseen by the US Department of Defense. Eureka is inhabited entirely by genius scientist employed by Global Dynamic/GD, with a few exceptions.
One such exception is Eureka's sheriff, US Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), who landed the job completely by accident, when the town's appointed lawman became incapacitated.
The cast also includes Jack's daughter Zoe (Jordan Hinson), his deputy, Jo Lupo (Erica Cerra), his on-again-off-again love interest, Dr. Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Eureka residents Dr. Henry Deacon (Joe Morton), Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston), Zane Donovan (Niall Matter) and others.
In it's simplest form, Eureka is like high tech Three's Company, in that each week, there's a whacky mishap that works itself out by the end of the episode, or in Eureka's case, a malfunctioning robot, computer virus, or deadly invasion. Don't get me wrong, it's obviously much more than that, there's intricate personal relationships, drama, comedy action and suspense to boot, all presented by clever writing and imaginative not-so-distant futuristic gismos, including Jack's talking house, and Jo's co-worker, a humanoid robot deputy
Speaking of the show's writers, for the 4th season, they presented an interesting twist when, as the residents of Eureka were preparing for their annual Founder's Day Celebration, the show's five main cast members ended up traveling back in time to when Eureka was first founded. All was thought well when they managed to return to the present day, until they realized not everything was the same. For instance, Jack's ex-wife is back in the picture, Allison's autistic son is no longer autistic, Jo's boyfriend Zane has no memory of their relationship, Henry is now married and Fargo--typically a bit of a screw-up, is now in charge of GD. Oh yeah, and James Callis, who appeared in the 1940's timeline as Dr. Trevor Grant, an assistant to Albert Einstein, somehow managed to be transported to 2010 Eureka.
Confused? You won't be after today's Syfy marathon. Rebroadcasts of Season 4 episodes began at 8am/7central and continues until tonight's mid-season finale premiere episode I'll Be Seeing You, which airs at 9pm/8central.
