Mother never had much patience when it came to cooking. When it took too long, Mother always had something to do and thought she could keep an eye on it. Therefore, there were times when Mother would burn her old-fashioned custard sauce. Since we didn’t have much money, we ate it anyone. Any burnt specks I saw floating in my sauce, I would simply remove them with a spoon. As I grew older, I helped Mother with her holiday sauce. I had more patience and would stand and stir making sure the sauce didn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
Now, plum pudding or baked Indian pudding didn’t taste the same without this special sauce. Once again, from my family to yours, enjoy!
Ingredients: 1 cup milk, 2 beaten egg yolks, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon real vanilla extract.
Directions: Scald milk over double boiler. Beat yolks, sugar, and salt together and add the milk. Cook over double boiler—stirring constantly until the mixture forms a creamy coat over the mixing spoon. Chill until completely cooled and then add vanilla—again mixing well.
