One of my favorite memories growing up in a small town was when someone left a fruit basket on our back porch. It was such a warm gesture at a time when we could use a fruit basket. Mother and I wanted to thank the person responsible, but no one ever admitted to leaving us this wonderful surprise.
If you have ever thought of putting a fruit basket together, the following is a great idea:
Ingredients: 2 grapefruit (to serve four people), 1 orange, 1 small avocado, 1 mango, carambola, or other fruit, creamy salad dressing, maraschino cherries.
Directions: Cut the grapefruit in half and remove sections carefully. Then dice. Clean out the grapefruit shells and cut points or scallops into the edges of each to make attractive serving bowls. Combine all of the fruits, coating them with salad dressing. Place in the carve skins, topping each with a maraschino cherry.
All ingredients for the grapefruit and fruit baskets can be purchased at Fresh Pride on 8506 Chesapeake Blvd. in Norfolk, Virginia.
