In memory of Mother: How to cook a New York strip steak

See also

Cooking a steak was never Mother’s thing. She always cooks steak, until it was well-done! We did not own a grill, so steaks were always pan-fried.

Now, when it came to cooking a great steak the task was given to Daddy. He knew how to pan-fry a steak to perfection. Eating steak was not on the menu, until Daddy was declared 100 percent unemployable by the Veteran’s Administration, as one suffering from a nervous condition. Another name for a nervous condition is post-traumatic stress disorder. Daddy had witnessed his whole platoon getting wiped out! Only he and one other person survived the attack near Cherbourg, France during World War II.

Did you know that one 3 oz. steak supplies 22.5 grams of protein. The dietary reference intake (DRI) for protein ranges from 46 to 56 grams per day so one steak provides nearly half the DRI for protein per day. The protein in a New York strip steak is made up of 19 amino acids, including all 10 essential amino acids; essential amino acids must be obtained through the diet, as they are not made in the body.

There are several methods one can use in cooking a steak, whether it is a New York Strip or another type of steak. One can broil it, pan fry it (like my dad), or bake it in the oven.

A New York strip steak should be at room temperature before one starts to cook it. Now, if it happens to be wet, one should pat it dry with wet towels before using a marinade. A good quality New York strip steak should be about an inch and a half thick, because anything thinner will dry out.

The best place to purchase to a New York strip steak is at Fresh Pride in Norfolk, Virginia. They are well-known in the local area for their fresh cuts of meat with great prices.

Fresh Pride is definitely the BEST family store in town. Senior Citizens can save 5% every Tuesday and Thursday. Now, that is all day long! In addition, double coupons up to 50 cents EVERYDAY!

Personally, I really enjoy shopping at Fresh Pride on 8506 Chesapeake Boulevard in Norfolk, Virginia. After all, Fresh Pride is a family store in an urban setting!
