As mentioned in part one, herbal teas such as catnip, ginseng, kava kava, licorice, peppermint and vervain may provide more help than prescriptive drugs for those suffering from post-traumatic, stress-disorder. Naturally, more research needs to be done and probably will not happen, because natural herbs are not a money-maker like prescriptive drugs.
In this article, catnip, ginseng and kava kava will be discussed as possible stress relievers for nervous conditions.
For starters, catnip is not just for cats. It is a natural antacid for stomach distress and acid reflux. Catnip is a marvelous tea for all-over relief. Soothing and sedative for one’s nerves, it eases internal stress, anxiety, stops internal spasms, soothes digestive distress, fights indigestion, heartburn, and gas. Catnip tea is also a gentle way to achieve more restful sleep.
To make catnip tea, one will need 1 teaspoon of dried catnip in a 8 to 10 oz mug. Take water off the heat and add it only after it has stopped boiling. Boiling water is believed to destroy some of the positive effects of catnip.
Then, let it steep for at least 5 minutes, but no longer than 20 minutes. One can add other herbs to one’s catnip tea, such as other mint varieties or lemon grass. Also, one can add honey or lemon juice. Just add a bit to make the flavor to fit one’s taste.
If one is not interested in drinking catnip tea, one can use fresh, cut-up catnip in one’s salad.
The next herb to discuss is ginseng. Ginseng has many uses, such as being a powerful antidote for stress, debility and weakness. It acts on the pituitary and adrenal glands and stimulates the nervous system to decrease fatigue.
One of the common complaints Daddy had, since he suffered from post-traumatic, stress-disorder, was the lack of energy.
Besides catnip and ginseng, kava kava is another known herb that can help a nervous condition. Kava kava is a mild sedative that creates a tranquil feeling that reputedly does not lead to any loss in concentration or change in motor reflexes. It can ease heart palpitations, relax muscles, relieves anxiety, tension, and emotional stress.
Another common complaint Daddy had was heart palpitations. Imagine if he had known about kava kava!
