In memory of Mother: Colds, flu, ginger, echinacea, garlic

As a child, I never went to see a medical doctor during cold and flu season. Mother used her own special cold formula. I do not know what she put in it, but it was sure was tasty!

Eventually, Mother stopped using it, because she could no longer purchase the necessary ingredients. She began to rely on store-bought medications, which were not as effective.

A year after her passing, I went through her collection of various recipes. I was not able to find the directions to her cold formula.

Recently, I read up on home remedies for colds and flu. I would like to share these suggested remedies one can do at home.

Naturally, one should drink plenty of fluids, such as apple juice, dark grape juice, carrot juice or beet juice. In addition, one needs to drink a quart of water daily.

However, since my family is on a low-carb diet, fruit juices are not on our list of food choices at the present time.

So, what does one do?

After further study, I found that drinking ginger tea is antiviral and helps break up the mucus and congestion. One should boil two tablespoons of fresh grated ginger in eight ounces of water. Let it cool and drink as needed.

My family has used ginger in the past, but it has not been as effective in that regard. However, much to my delight, I read that garlic helps break up chest congestion and  I just happen to have several bottles stored on my 'home remedies' shelf.

Two garlic tablets taken three times a day will help break up the mucus from sinus or chest congestion. I have purchased garlic supplements with an enteric coating. These tablets should be taken with a meal and not on an empty stomach.

Another suggested supplement is echinacea, which is believed to help prevent colds and the flu virus. However, it is not a supplement to take on a continual basis.

More information about garlic and echinacea is offered below:
